 Media Coverage Independent Media: Defined here as operating without influence from established interests, these organizations are usually volunteer-run or non-profit. Some independent media organizations may sell subscriptions and/or products related to their political perspectives, however they do not appear to be turning a substantial profit from these activities. In addition, if they were turning a substantial profit, this would still not place them in the class of media influenced by the established power structure. *Background on the Independent Media Centers "IMC's are a network of collectively run media outlets for the creation of radical, objective, and passionate tellings of the truth. We work out of a love and inspiration for people to who continue to work for a better world, despite corporate media's distortions and unwillingness to cover the efforts to free humanity. The IMC movement started with coverage of the n30 WTO protests in Seattle. Since then, 35+ IMC's have sprung up around the globe: in Boston to cover Bio Devastation 2000; the a16 IMF/World Bank protests in Washington, DC; the s26 IMF/World Bank protests in Prague; and the Republican and Democratic National Convention protests in Philadelphia and Los Angeles." The Philly IMC provided extensive coverage of the Republican National Convention protests, through articles, photo, video, and audio-- including satellite TV broadcasts and streaming web radio. Further coverage was carried by other IMC's in the US and internationally, including the global IMC site, www.indymedia.org. |
